As Goemon, your goal is to get to the koi decoration on Edo Castle. Your trip won't be an easy one as you:
When you reach the halfway point of any stage you will be meet by a stack of coffers. Jump right befor you run into them to collect one for a big point bonus. Your foes have a number of means to attempt to stop you on your quest:
|
 |
Tossable Items: This variety of Items is Goemon's second means of attack. Pick them up and toss them at foes! |
 |
HAMMER: This will make you invisible for a short while. Use this to your advantage by running into foes and gaining points! |
 |
BARREL: Push this along, and it will roll and take out all foes who touch it! |
 |
COFFER: A stack of money chests. Jump before the midway break to collect one for a point bonus. |
---Bouncing on people's head can increase your jumping height! Use this to reach high platforms and items!
---Additionally, bouncing on people's head will stun them. Use this to your advantage.
---Points are not quite so valuable, as you get 1ups after the first 20,000 points, and every 60,000 points afterward. With this system, you will see it is very hard to earn more than one 1up during the course of this game
---Large Bosses can only be hurt by Tossable items, so don't stray too close to them, or run the risk of being posioned
|
---You can save your tossable item through a break and carry it over to the next stage.
---Goemon CANNOT swim. Falling in water means instant death!
---Remeber that your goal is to get to the end of the stage, not to defeat a boss.
---You can negate enemy shots with your own attacks, so don't forget you defend yourself when dodging becomes impossible.

This is the first game to introduce us to Goemon, Althought Konami would tell you that Ganbare Goemon! Karakuri Douchu is the official start of the series. Far from revolutionary for it's time, the game sported amazing graphics and good controls, as far as platforming action games go. It is surprising, however, that, like the other early Goemon games, this game never made it out of Japan. It has been hypothesized that it was because of the strangling that Goemon suffers by his foes was what drove this game from US and European release (It was 1986, after all).
Not a long game by any means, Mr. Goemon does what most classic arcade games did, that is, challange players to compete against each other for the highest score. Goemon's appearance is very raw, based more heavily on old art renditions of the Goemon of folklore and legend. Like most games of old, of course, beating the game is something done by only the very skilled, as stages get very difficult and you are limited by the number of 1ups you have.

With the Koi Decoration in hand, Goemon celebrates his victory. You are also rewarded with a masive point bonus!
