Game Mechanics
As Goemon, your ultimate goal is to find the Feudal Lord of Japan. To do that, however, you have to pass through a number of territories and towns. As you progress:

To beat stages and progress, you are to find the "end" of the stage. These generally resemble large gates. But to pass through, you need to have 3 passes with you. You will find these passes in a number of places:

Item List
ONIGIRI: Purchase at stores, it will restore your life energy the instant it drops down to 0.
MANEKI NEKO: This power up item will give you a sling shot.
SLING SHOT: Recieved by getting a maneki neko or bought at stores, your normal attack will become a projectile attack.
TAKO MASK: This power up item will give you a pair of sandles.
SANDLES: Recieved by getting a tako mask or bought at stores. This power up item increases your running speed as well as the distance you can jump. You can have up to three in stock.
CANDLE: Purchase at stores, it makes all hidden passages viewable without jumping over them for a limited time.
COFFER: A money chest, it is worth 100 ryo.
BOWL OF NOODLES: Purchase at stores, it will refill some of your life energy.
PASS: Key item for passing most stages. You need three of these when you get to the end of the stage.
DANGO: Found in secret passages, it will refill some of your life energy.
SCROLL: Found in secret passages, this will extend your life bar.
HAMMER: Will appear only once after jumping over an obstacle, it will make you invinsible for a short while.
TIME: Purchase at stores, it will add 100 seconds to your time limit.
BONUS POINTS: These items are hidden throughout a stage. Depending on how many of one you collect in a stage, they can give you 1000~5000 or an 1up.
OMAMORI: Purchase at stores, it protects against certain attacks 5 times.
INROU: Purchase at stores, it protects against certain attacks 5 times.
STRAW HAT: Purchase at stores, it protects against Bird Dung 5 times.
HELMET: Purchase at stores, it protects against falling rocks 5 times.
ARMOR: Purchase at stores, it protects against 8 attacks.

General Tips
---Pots and baskets reset after you leave an area or walk away a set distance, so use this to your advantage to stock up on money and power-ups.
---The most important items to have are, luckily, free. Grab Maneki Neko and Tako Masks power-ups before you venture deeper into an area.
---Remeber that Sandles are critical in increasing your jumping distance across gaps and over obtacles.
---Because the Candle has a very short time limit, Plan your search route in advance and don't stray/back track after you buy one!
---Be extra careful of thieves, they will steal your money!
---A lone bush in a path is always suspicious, so try jumping over them for a hammer!
---Remeber, you are not hunting for passes in the last stage. Just rush over to the castle and find the Lord's room!
---Goemon CANNOT swim. Falling in water means instant death. Likewise, all falls mean instant death, so time your jumps carefully.
---Nearly all 3D mazes contain a pass to collect, so be sure to stop in for one.
---You get a score bonus for the time remaining when you beat a stage. But if you are just aiming to beat the game, it's best to build up some cash with your spare time before you exit a stage.

Review
The first game to truly hold the title "Ganbare Goemon," and, as far as we know, the first 3D movement platformer action game. Since the 3D paths prove to be so much easier to traverse compared to their 2D counterparts, Konami created the catch of finding and collecting passes, which, as many gamers have experienced, is no easy task. The game's final result is basically an easter egg hunt, as along with the passes, you also will find secret passages and secret point items throughout the game. The easter eggs actually get harder and harder to find as you progress from stage to stage, and will require a little thinking "outside of the box" to find. Many quit this game before finishing because of how fustrating the search can be.

Goemon himself still hasn't gotten his trademark puffy hair style, and as a wanted theif, Konami figured that he would look best always looking over his shoulders. For a game of its time, it sported fairly good graphics, as the background of the stages are more complex than other games of it's era. As an added touch, the police officers actually cry out "Eta" (which translates roughly to "low life peasant") at you as they give chase.

Ending (highlight text in window to see)
After fighting through loads of soilders and guards at the Castle, Goemon was in for a suprise when he finally finds the secret chambers of the lord. The Feudal Lord welcomes Goemon with open arms and much praise. He gives a heartfelt apology for the corruption, and offers Goemon a gift to make amends.
